Believe it or not, dogs are animals that use to have skin problems. Allergies, itching and irritation are some of the most common ones, and are usually caused by insect bites like fleas and reactions to food or foreign substances such as pollen.

The most common skin diseases in dogs can be summarized in five types:

  1. Skin problems for allergies: The skin of a dog can have different types of allergies. Atopic dermatitis is the most common pathology with an allergic origin in these animals. Symptoms include itching, redness and dryness.
  1. Shock and trauma: There are certain injuries such as strokes, burns and domestic accidents that have consequences for the dog's skin. It is important to be aware of any of them and treat them with antiseptics, antibiotics or anti-inflammatory ointments prescribed by the veterinarian.
  1. Tumors and cysts: The skin cancer tumors, sebaceous cysts, adenomas (similar to warts) or melanomas (skin blemishes) are common dermatological disorders in dogs, especially over 11 years.
  1. Internal diseases that also affect the skin: It is not necessary that the problem is external to affect the skin. If vital organs like the liver are sick, the skin reflects this problem through its color or texture. Also other diseases such as diabetes or hyperthyroidism affect the health of canine skin, presenting ulcers, sores or complex wound healing.
  1. Parasites: Fleas and ticks. Parasites are a source of problems for the dog's skin. They are responsible for the appearance of various skin problems such as dermatitis. Compulsive scratching that causes them creates a skin irritation characterized by inflammation and redness on the skin. In addition, they can cause severe parasitic or infectious diseases such as canine ehrlichiosis. It is therefore important that our dog is always protected against these parasites, to avoid such problems and ensure that their skin is healthy.
